Forms and uses of
energy
VII SPH
1.
Energy is
the ability to do work.
2.
Non
living system also need energy to function :
car and aeroplanes need fuel to provide them with energy to move

3.
Potential
energy is stored energy due to a body's
position or condition
ex: arrow pulled, spring pressed.
ex: arrow pulled, spring pressed.
4.
Example
of potential energy:
a. Chemical potential energy : energy stored in
fuels such as petrol and food that can be released through chemical reaction
b. Gravitational potential energy: energi that an
object has because of its position or location. When the object is in a higher
position with respect to the ground, it has more gravitational potential energy
than in a lower position.
c. Elastic potential energy: energy that an
object has when it is stretched or compressed. Ex: arrow pulled, spring pressed
5.
Kinetic
energy is the energy that a body has due
to its motion. All moving object have kinetic energy. Ex: a girl walking
down the street, a car speeding down the road.
6.
Heat is the energy that flows from a region or
higher temperature to one of lower temperature. Heat flows from things that are hot. Heat is used in
homes for cooking, heating water,
ironing clothes. In factories, heat is needed for procrsses like melting metals, creating steam to turn turbines and
making chemical reacts.
7.
Light is the energy that enables us to see.
8.
Sound is the energy produced when objects vibrate.
9.
Sound
allow us to communicate and enjoy music,
and used as a warning.
Ex: when a fire breaks out
Ex: when a fire breaks out
10. Electricity/
electrical energy is the energy that
results from the flow of charges particle.
11.
Electricity
is a useful from of energy that can be
transformed into many
other forms of energy.
other forms of energy.
12.
Energy
transformation:
a.
Light energy > chemical potential energy :
photosynthesis in plants
b.
Elactic potential energy > kinetic energy :
an archer releasing his bow
c.
Chemical potential energy >kinetic energy +
sound energy + light energy + hear energy : a moving car
13.
Electrical
generators are used to convert kinetic
energy to electricity
